Rubbing to spine ends and leading corners. The two arti relics included are pictured on p. 153, among 9 pieces of "Rare Stone Artifacts from Central America."

By 1915 Edward W. Payne, a prominent and wealthy resident of Springfield had assembled over 43 large collections of Indian Relics and at the time of his death in 1932 had the largest collection ever assembled in this country if not in the entire world. Efforts to keep the collection intact failed and it was offered for sale in 1935. A year later the balance of the collection was taken to Dickson Mound in Lewiston, Illinois where the selling continued..

3 parts in 1; 234, 239, 428 pp.; 12mo; original polished tan calf; crown over decorative design stamped in gilt front cover; letters & decorations stamped in gilt on spine in six compartments with titles on red & brown leather labels; marbled pastesdowns, endpapers, and edges. Rubbing and moderate wear at edges and spine with minute loss at crown; joints appear to have had some expert repair in the past; title gilt on third panel for the most part effaced; dark "burned" spot bottom front edge. Tanning to endpapers at edges, but title and text pages exceptionally clean in a solid binding.

First appearing in 1675, and an early entry in the rise of the newly fashionable 'nouvelle historique', at a time when novel writing was under attack by moralists for telling lies and stimulating the passions. In this historical novel, Boisguilbert claimed to be telling the truth about Mary Queen of Scots, not writing a 'romance', apparently hoping to blunt the criticism..

30 copies issued, this an out of series Press Copy WITHOUT THE LAID IN, EXTRA SUITE OF PRINTS. Folio; handsewn and branch-laced limp vellum; enclosed in a box of bay laurel and cedar woods. Includes prospectus, also The Making of the Book, with photographs of printer Aaron Johnson, binder Rene Menge, Baskin, Fowles, and Michael Gidron working on the box. Plus a printed letter on Yolla Bolly letterhead, telling how the book came about, signed by Carolyn and James Robertson.

Both the Lawrence text and the Fowles commentary are composed in the Bembo types and printed, with the nine Baskin blocks, by letterpress on mould-formed English Somerset paper. The design of the vellum binding is based upon Christopher Clarkson's study of bindings of the early sixteenth century. Endleaves were handmade at the Twinrocker Paper Mill..

7 volumes; Elephant folio; vinyl clamshell boxes, each containing 24 tipped-in prints in color except for volume 7 which has monochromes in black & white or limited color; all housed in loose portfolios; each volume with separate portfolio of artist biography, and descriptions of the prints, in Japanese and English. In original cardboard shipping boxes. The shipping boxes are worn & stained, but have kept the clamshell boxes and their contents overall in very fine condition. Collated complete; vol. 1, port. 12 has staining to a portion of lower leading corner outside and inside but below the plate; otherwise very occasional light soil from handling to portfolios. An amazing and ambitious project, beautifully executed.

Including: 2 different shots of the Animal Yard one of which is the Bear Pit, 1877, the other dated 1875 on the card reads 1865 on the photo. The others are scenes titled Woodward's Gardens on the card, two 1875 and one 1877, showing interior grounds and buildings. The sixth photo is an 8.5" x 7" copy print of the Circular Boat Ride, 1882.
