William Anderson Scott (1813-85), Tennesee-born Presbyterian clergyman. Arrived in San Francisco in 1854 becoming a cultural leader, obviously wasting no time in publishing this religious dissertation on the lusts that accompany the worship of gold reflected in the parable of Achan and the fall of Jericho. Scott had to leave the city because he was an outspoken Southern sympathizer during the Civil War, but returned in 1870 and founded St. John's Church. He is remembered also for having married Robert Louis Stevenson and Fanny Osbourne, and for founding the San Francisco Theological Seminary..
