Collection of poems, short prose pieces, and a penultimate short essay: "Speaking in Tongues as Poetic Endeavor." Andrew Hoyem is a typographer, letterpress printer, publisher and poet, now well known as the founder and director of the Arion Press in San Francisco. In 1966 he became associated with Robert Grabhorn, forming a partnership under the name Grabhorn-Hoyem, which was reformed as Arion Press after Grabhorn's death in 1973. Never published as Northern Lights, many the pieces were later published in his - What If, Poems: 1969-1987, with varying degrees of change in some poems. Approximately 31 pieces, including the essay cited above, did not make the journey into What If. A typed copyright page, bound 13 sheets in, indicates that some of the poems in the manuscript were first published in little magazines such as Ephemeris, Noose, Sumac; in the anthology Mark In Time; as broadsides by Grabhorn-Hoyem, Valenti Angelo, Arion Press, and in Picture/Poems, an illustrated catalogue of drawings and related writings exhibited at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco published by Arion Press, 1975..
