McConkie, Bruce R. Mormon Doctrine. Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, Inc., 1958. First Edition, First Printing. Good condition No statement of additional printings, printed by Deseret News Press, with their name in diamond device on copyright. 776 pps.; 8vo; green cloth, illustration of Joseph Smith on front cover, without dust jacket. Covers soiled with rubbing at extremities and back cover; slender 2" white score at bottom edge of back cover; occasional small check marks in pen at margins; gift inscription dated 1958, on front endpaper.
McConkie's describes his effort in the Preface as "the first major attempt to digest, explain, and analyze all of the important doctrines of the kingdom" and "the first extensive compendium of the whole gospel—the first attempt to publish an encyclopedic commentary covering the whole field of revealed religion." He included a disclaimer that he alone was responsible for the doctrinal and scriptural interpretations, an unusual practice at the time. McConkie was taken to task for publishing the book without permission or revue by church leaders. Objecting to what they considered a harsh tone, with errors and misstatements, they asked him not to reprint the book, later allowing him to revise it for the second edition of 1966.. Price:
