Horace. Odes [38 poemsTranslated by Michael Taylor] [San Francisco]: [Greenwood Press], [1992]. Limited Edition. As New No. 100 of 250 copies hand set and printed by Jack Werner Stauffacher, set in the original 17th century Baroque types cut by the Hungarian punch-cutter Nicholas Kis, in Amsterdam, 1686. Numbered and signed by Stauffacher on colophon ; (12x7½"), stiff wrappers, paper dust jacket. Includes the supplement (as issued) titled: The Continuity of Horace. 32 pp. With 37 images. Wrappers. Both volumes housed in stiff paper slipcase. Both volumes in protective glassine jackets.
Also laid in is a large folding broadside announcing the publication, an addendum sheet, folding announcement, and a 12 page booklet, Nicholas Kis, by Gyorgy Haiman, printed by Greenwood Press. Finally, 3 sheets of promotional material stapled at corner consisting of a copy of a typed letter from the editors, Taylor & Stauffacher regarding Horace; 'Dear Horace' by Primo Levi, from "The Mirror Maker", printed by the press on both sides; and a copy of h.l.s. on the letterhead of The University of Chicago, Dept. of Classics from Ralph Johnson to Jack Stauffacher in thanks and praise.. Hard Cover, Poor condition. 173 pp., frontis engraving & title vignette engraving; tall 8vo; quarter leather, black leather spine label stamped in gilt; marbled endpapers. Front board detached, rear board loose, attached by two of three string cords. Two spots of minor foxing to title page, else clean; extensive marginalia in pencil written in French. Text also in French.
