Volume 1 with lower corner crease to front endpapers and half-title; remnant of bookplate or publisher's ticket front endpaper [2 inches x half-inch] at hinge; covers with moderate rubbing & soil, a few spots to spines; pages; very occasional minor foxing, soil to some margins & edges, including some small spots at edges of a few plate away from image. Overall a very solid, sturdy set with clean text pages and plates.

Wallace and Charles Darwin were both influenced by the economic theories of Thomas Malthus, which led them to develop similar theories of natural selection. Wallace was considered the 19th century's leading expert on the geographical distribution of animal species and is sometimes called the "father of biogeography"..
