1 Attorney-General.; United States; Department of the Interior, United States, etc. Letter of the Attorney General, communicating, in compliance with a resolution of the Senate of the 5th instant, correspondence and papers relative to the case of the United States vs. Vicente P. Gomez, involving the claims to the land called "Panoche Grande."

40th Congress, 3d Session; Senate; Ex. Doc. No. 48, 48 pt. 2, and 48 pt.3;. 32, 2, 196 pages. Bound in mustard cloth, with paper spine label. Spine darkened with a bit of rubbing at edges near top; minor strip of abrasion to front pasteddown from label, or bookplate removal.

A rich quicksilver deposit was discovered near Santa Clara California in 1848 and soon The New Idria Quicksilver Mining Company established a productive mine. In 1858, William McGarrahan (1828-1894) sued New Idria, claiming that the mine is located on the Panoche Grande, a land grant he purchased from Vicente Gomez. The ensuring legal battle continued for 36 years, becoming the longest in United States history and eventually involving the United States Congress, Presidential actions, finally ending with the death of McGarrahan in Aril 1894..

Marshall was the fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (18011835), and Secretary of State under President John Adams from 1800 to 1801. Marshall had been a leader of the Federalist Party in Virginia and served in the United States House of Representatives from 1799 to 1800. His opinions as Chief Justice were foundational in United States Constitutional Law..
