First book appearance by master photographer Wynn Bullock [1902-1975]. Philosophical concepts, such as his depiction of 'all four dimensions of reality', and a 'theory of opposites' in which nothing can exist without it's opposite, are expressed in his images..

Limited to 174 numbered and 26 lettered copies printed. This copy, numbered 5, from the first 130 copies presented by James Linden to members of the Colophon Club and the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco on the occasion of their first joint meeting. Printed by James Linden, with the facilities of the Press in Tuscany Alley..

Publisher's advertisemet in back names Russell Sedgfield, and Stephen Thompson as photographers for the nine images. Front joint cracked with wear to top of spine; modrate soil; front hinge cracked with rough & jagged repair still holding fairly firm. Moderate foxing to tissue guards, plate pages show occasional soil at foredge, otherwise pages and particularly the mounted photographs clean.

No title page but appears to conform to "Sunset City and Sunset Scenes" which was issued bound in wrappers in 15 parts. This copy: 4to (10" x 14"); bound in black half-leather over terra-cotta cloth; spine title stamped in gilt; 226 photographic plates (14 double-page), with descriptive captions. Moderate rubbing to leather at joints and corners; half-inch split to front joint at bottom of spine; faint cup ring front cover; superficial vertical crease down middle of front and back covers; hinges cracked but holding firm; front endpapers creased; dampstain to front lower corner tip of first ten leaves, far away from image. Binding remains solid with all of the plates very well preserved.

"An elaborate series of photographic views of the Fair, held in Golden Gate Park, and of scenes of California. They were taken by Isaiah West Taber, the leading photographer on the Pacific Coast, and include pictures of individual buildings, exhibits, and scenes, with fourteen double-page panoramic views."
