Peters was in Connecticut at the time of the Gold Rush and took the ship Elfa from New York to San Francisco. He first worked as a cook in Sacramento, then took up mining in Amador county. Most of the book is a history of mining by Thomas Jones, called The Good Luck Era. Kurutz, 500; Cowan II, p. 480.
