After several years in the "land o' cakes", and and more than four months in the gold fields the good doctor from Poland gives a brief history of California, followed by a discourse on the mines, with practical advice to miners, and finally a description of San Francisco and its harbour, noting the lack of women. The first edition of 1849 had the distinction of being the first book of an original nature published in English in California. (Kurutz 678D)
