285 pp., (14) p., publisher's ads; 8vo; light brown cloth lettered in gilt with floral illustration accross spine & front cover, Covers soiled with a somewhat pronounced blotch on back. Ownership names in pencil front endpaper: "Mr. & Mrs. Elam Biggs, Grass Valley, Cal., 1886." Four copy photographs laid in showing Mr. and Mrs. Biggs, the Victorian House that he built which is currently the Elam Biggs Bead & Breakfast in Grass Valley; also a photograph of Elam Biggs in front of his establishment captioned: "Biggs turned a store at 114 Mill Street bought in 1890 into one the West Coast's largest retail providers of 'hardware, iron, steel, coal, cutlery . . . sheet iron ware' . . . etc.

In the book Mr. Hardy offers practical 'management' advice on the happy marriage, padded with many passages and quotes from literature. The chapter entitled "Nursing Fathers" and "Husbands Have Duties Too" among others, appear to indicate what might pass for a progressive attitude toward marital fidelity. Elam and Mary look reasonably content in the photographs.
