8vo; cloth; five of the ten volumes in fair to good dust jackets verying degrees of wear including heavy tanning, chips, and tears. Illustrated with plates including portraits and facsimiles. All volumes with some even tanning to foredges & top edges; occasionlal light pencil checks and and a word or name in margins, otherwise clean and solid.

The poet became a preacher at the insistance of King James I, and thus Donne was ordained deacon and priest in 1615. Two years later his wife Anne died after giving birth to a stillborn child. In bereavement he embraced his religious vocation fully, and with power and eloquence continued to create the divine prose that made him the foremost preacher in 17th century England.
