Wilkes commanded six ships on a major exploratory and scientific expedition covering South Pacific islands, Antarctica, and the northwest coast of North America. He sailed into San Francisco Bay (1841) and also sent to it an overland detachment from Astoria via the Willamette and Sacramento rivers. (Hart, Companion to Calif.)
