George Sterling (1869-1926), born in Sag Harbor, N.Y., Puritan stock pegged for the priesthood, fell for poetry in school, washed up in Oakland with a sinecure in his uncle's real estate office. Still smitten by verse, he met Ambrose Bierce, among other literary lights, who became his mentor. And so the bohemian life everafter in The Grove, at Carmel, and his Cool, Grey City of Love, in a romantic pursuit of the visionary and the mystical, mainly in sonnets.
