Andersen on front pastedown depicting the raising of the Bear Flag. Rubbing to spine, effacing some of gilt, with a circular sticker shadow lower portion; rubbing to corners and edges; faint stain bottom edge title page to viii; very occasional spot of foxing to text pages; tiny notes in pencil found on some bottom margins, and a few found between lines. Joints and hinges are sound. In later custom slipcase.

Bayard Taylor (1825-78), as a young writer of literary and travel articles for the New York Tribune, was sent to report on California during the gold rush. He wrote frequent letters to the paper that formed the basis of this book. Number 73 in the Zamorano 80 classics of California History.
