No. 9 of 100 copies. Inscribed by the author on front endpaper: "To Donald H. McLaughlin, with esteem and best wishes, Nahum Sabsay, June 12, 1960." 346pp.; 8vo; gray cloth, spine lettered in gilt; in plain mylar wrap, as issued.
Scarce first edition of Sabsay's dramatic first person account of his years as a soldier at the front, fighting Germans and Austrians, and ultimately the Communist Red Army. To escape the chaos Sabsay fled eastward across Siberia. After arriving in the U.S. In 1918, he would go on to study mining engineering at Harvard and moved to California where he worked as a tool and die maker while perfecting his English and writing. Sabsay died in 1965. Donald H. McLaughlin, to whom the book is inscribed, was an eminent mining engineer and had a life long association with the University of California at Berkeley.
