Stevenson's Regiment was the name applied to the First Regiment of New York Volunteers, whose commander was Col. Jonathan D. Stevenson, a Democratic ward politician of New York City recruited by Secretary of War March to lead to California a military force for service in the Mexican War, and promised discharge there for later settlement as part of an Americanization program.
