Sandra Kirshenbaum writes in 5 Fine Printers: "And finally, after several years of intermittent research, experimentation, and thought, Stauffacher published in 1978 the work which may stand as the magnum opus of the Greenwood Press, Phaedrus a Dialogue by Plato. The book was an outgrowth of Stauffacher's own longtime admiration for the text and his desire to present it in a typographic form of absolute clarity, something notoriously difficult to do with dialogue because the repeated names of the speakers interfere with the flow of reading. Stauffacher's unique solution was to 'conduct' the dialogue typographically by having Socrates' speech appear always on the recto pages and Phaedrus' always on the versos . . This innovative arrangement has provoked some controversy, but the book is undeniably a remarkable paradigm of Stauffacher's principal typographic concerns: the exploration of the dialectic between author and reader, and the creation of an effective, uncluttered instrument for its conveyance".
